“For this reason, we must pay attention all the more to what we have heard, so that we will not drift away.” Hebrews‬ ‭2:1‬ ‭CSB‬‬

Now that the author has firmly established the grandeur and worthiness of our Saviour, He is establishing what is a very important point. That we must pay attention to the message of salvation so that we will not slip past it. To me the phrase ‘drift away’ brings to mind an image of a lifeboat – where on the lifeboat something falls out into the vast ocean. Because it is no longer in the boat you helplessly watch it drift away into the horizon until it is no more.

The Greek word for drift away is παραρρέω (pararreō) which is only used in the New Testament once…here. It is a specific Greek phase mostly used by philosophers to describe something flowing past you that you can not catch or contain. It also alludes towards a thought that escapes you. The author is telling us how important it is that we remember who Jesus is and his greatness otherwise the free gift of salvation will slip us by.

In our walk with God, whenever we take our focus off Jesus and who He is, the gift of salvation will easily slip us by. Why? Because the flesh is weak and whenever we stop focusing on Him, we start focusing on us. When we start focusing on us, it starts to become about our selfish desires instead of living to serve and please the one who purchased us.

I am sorry to say, the gift of salvation was not so that you could continue to live in the world and in sin, but so that you could be set free from sin and start living a life of pleasing service to God. But you will see that as we continue through the letter to the Hebrews.

Today set your focus on Jesus and who He is to ensure the salvation He gives you does not drift away and be lost forever.
