Hebrews‬ ‭1:5

For to which of the angels did he ever say, You are my Son; today I have become your Father, or again, I will be his Father, and he will be my Son?”

The author is quoting the Old Testament scriptures back to the readers to prompt people that Jesus was prophesied about before He came. It was also to highlight how superior Jesus is compared to other things. The rest of the first chapter to the Hebrews is dedicated to these references. Today I want for us to dig into the Father and Son relationship that is referenced.

When you look into the original word used for Son (υἱός -yhios) it is quite a deep word that extends the simple English meaning for being a direct descendant. It has layers implying being someone who depends on someone and completely follows that individual. The term for Father (πατήρ – patēr) also extends past being a literal father who bore a child. It has many deeper layers and hints. One of which is a teacher who has passed on knowledge and the way to live to others. It can also be someone who has infused their Spirit into another and therefore actuates and governs their minds.

When you understand this, you can now understand how Jesus, as the Son of God the Father, knew the mind and will of God and was able to fulfil the complete and perfect will of the Father. Jesus was not just the Son of God through the act of the virgin birth, but He was also a pupil and follower of God’s perfect way who had the Spirit of God perfectly infused into Him so that His mind and actions were one with the mind and actions of God the Father.

Wow, Jesus is so awesome! Thank you God
