“We have a great deal to say about this, and it is difficult to explain, since you have become too lazy to understand. Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the basic principles of God’s revelation again. You need milk, not solid food.” ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭5:11-12‬

To a lot of people, the teaching of the past 5 chapters can be quite complex with a discussion of Melchizedek, high priests, rests, and hearts, but the author is almost harshly saying that this is but the tip of the iceberg. His desire is to dig deeper into these topics, but he cannot because the readers have become too lazy in their walk with God and therefore, they are unable to grasp or understand the deeper aspects.

As I mentioned yesterday, there are basics laid out when it comes to walking as a Christian, they are as clear as day in His Word. Those basics help us ensure we are not being “too lazy to understand”. In our walk with God, we should be advancing and growing. Being disciples and then disciplining others is a natural part of our walk. It is part of His great commission (the first one) to go forth and multiply. That is right we should be looking to lead others into the ways of the Lord, but as the author has alluded, most are not progressing.

Today we can see the same problem, people go to church and sit waiting to hear from the pastor and that is it, job done. However, that is not the way. You must hunger to learn the word yourself, you must hunger to hear from God yourself, and you must thirst for that relationship with Him. As you do you will naturally grow in the knowledge of Him and His Word, which will lead to you eventually helping others grow in Christ.
