“By faith Moses, after he was born, was hidden by his parents for three months, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they didn’t fear the king’s edict. By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter and chose to suffer with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasure of sin. For he considered reproach for the sake of Christ to be greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, since he was looking ahead to the reward.” ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭11:23-26‬ ‭CSB‬‬

Through this portion of scripture, there is an underlying theme that highlights to us faith at work. Trust in the God of the Bible will lead people to behave in ways that honour God despite what the world tells them to do. As per Egyptian law at the time of Moses’s birth, he was meant to be put to death, but his parents did not fear the king’s edict but instead feared God. This Godly fear led them to do what was right and preserve the life of Moses.

Moses rejected the offer of becoming Egyptian royalty to be instead associated with his heritage and calling, the Hebrew slaves. He left the opportunity to live a life of wealth, fame and luxuries of the world to instead be with the people God had assigned him. Moses rejected a life of sin and chose a life of obedience and holiness.

“For he considered reproach for the sake of Christ to be greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, since he was looking ahead to the reward.” The question for today’s devotional is, do you consider being disciplined and living a life free from the world to be a greater reward than the treasures of the world? A life of faith will lead you to forsake the fortunes and glory the world offers you so that you can pick up your cross and follow Jesus. There is no greater reward than to offer yourself into His arms for His glory because you know the eternal reward far outweighs the temporary pleasure provided by the things around us.
