“Since the law has only a shadow of the good things to come, and not the reality itself of those things, it can never perfect the worshipers by the same sacrifices they continually offer year after year. Otherwise, wouldn’t they have stopped being offered, since the worshipers, purified once and for all, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? But in the sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year after year. For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.” Hebrews‬ ‭10:1-4‬ ‭CSB‬‬

The author now moves on, and we are stepping into the deepest parts of understanding the power of the sacrifice of Jesus. The Mosaic Law was powerless in that no matter what, people did not change. They would continually keep on sinning and have to offer up sacrifices. So if we look at a real-life example, you have been outside playing in the mud and dirt. Your hands are now filthy, they have become discoloured, and there is dirt under your nails. You wash your hands with water, but the deeper dirt on your skin and the bacteria from the soil are still there. You have not made yourself fully clean, and if you were to eat in that condition, you have a high chance of being sick, the same opportunity as if you had not rinsed your hands (because the bacteria and parasites are still there). Now, if instead of using just water, you used water and soap? Soap has thoroughly cleansed your hands because the soap kills the bacteria and dislodges that hard-to-get dirt. Your hands are now clean, and you have no chance of getting ill when you eat. We can consider the sacrificial system as washing with just water. It was ineffective at actually cleansing us from the root danger of sin – eternal death. However, the blood of Jesus is like our soap. When we apply the blood of Jesus, sin’s threat is gone, which means we are no longer in danger. Using soap also means that we now appreciate our clean hands, and we no longer go out into the dirt and mud to make ourselves dirty. We now understand being clean and no longer sick.

I hope this makes sense to you. When you genuinely encounter and apply the blood of Jesus over your life, there will be a lasting change that results in you NOT going back into sin. If you have used the Blood of Jesus and there is no change, and you are continually going backwards, it is like you are saying the spilt blood of Jesus is just as effective as the blood of bulls and goats. Because that is all the nation of Israel had, they could not follow in God’s ways.

But now, because we have something that works to purify our sin (the Blood of Jesus), we are no longer dominated by sin, which means that we no longer step back into sin.

This freedom is the true power of the Blood, it sets us free from the wrath associated with sin but also sets us free from going back into sin.

Today appreciate the clean hands you get from the Blood of Jesus and choose to stay clean.
