“For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of God Most High, met Abraham and blessed him as he returned from defeating the kings, and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, his name means king of righteousness, then also, king of Salem, meaning king of peace. Without father, mother, or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever.” ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭7:1-3‬ ‭CSB‬‬

The author finished chapter 6 by stating that “Jesus has entered there on our behalf as a forerunner because he has become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭6:20‬ ‭CSB‬‬. We are now given something to chew on and think about. What does it mean to a priest to the order of Melchizedek? To understand why the author is explaining what the names mean, you must understand that culturally names were very significant as they were relevant to the person, their role and or the state of affairs. It was not like today where names are picked because they sound nice. So as we grasp this we can further start to understand the wonder that is Jesus entering into the holy of holies on our behalf.

We can understand that from Genesis, God was pointing us to look for the eternal king of peace and righteousness. That through the king-priest we will all show our respects and offer to him what is due.

Our eternal King of righteousness and peace is Jesus. He is the King and priest that goes before us and under whose kingdom we live. So if you feel low, lost and without identity today; remember Jesus is your King, you are under His kingdom and His kingdom is righteousness and peace. What a wonderful Lord and Saviour we have.
