Hebrews 2:17-18
Therefore, he had to be like his brothers and sisters in every way, so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in matters pertaining to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people. For since he himself has suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.
In this fragment of scripture there is so much for us to dig through and find much, much spiritual treasure. However, today we are going to focus on the last part of this sentence (because the first part will be covered in further detail by the author of the letter).
The Christian walk is the Way of being with God, through Jesus. It is the life that has accepted Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. It is the life that has freely chosen to lay down their own to serve the most glorious King. The original Greek word used to explain that Jesus is able to help us is βοηθέω (boētheō) which means, “to run to the cry (of those in danger); to help, succor, bring aid”. Let us sit on that thought for a moment.
When we are in a moment of temptation, weakness or lack of faith, Jesus comes running to our cry and brings us the help and support we need. The King we serve is not just the ruler or creator who has a dominion and harsh rule over us. No. We serve a king who came and lived the lives we live and He dominated and conquered all of our weaknesses Himself. Because He did that, He can sympathise with us and therefore, He comes to help those who serve Him.
Yes, what a wonderful and glorious God we serve. He is not just the Almighty God, but He is also the One who chose to overcome our failures so that He can help us from a position of mercy and sympathy. Thank you Jesus for your love for us!!
