Hebrews 2:2-3
“For if the message spoken through angels was legally binding and every transgression and disobedience received a just punishment, how will we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?…”
ἀμελέω (ameleō) – A Greek working meaning to be careless of, to make light of, neglect, be negligent, with no regard.
The author is now moving theme to highlight the consequences of what will happen should we neglect to take hold of what is offered us through Jesus. There are many teachings today that say, if you accept Jesus then that is it, you are going to heaven. Or, “once saved always saved”.
Sadly, these are not true, as the author here is clearly telling us and as he will continue to explain as we read on. What he is doing is reminding us about the punishment in the wilderness to the sons of Israel for being disobedient to the Word spoken by God to them. We can remember times such as the rebellion against Moses, which led to people being eaten up into the ground or making of a false image which led to people being slain or simply the disbelief that God would bring them into the promised land which led to all being left to die in the wilderness.
Disobedience to the Word of God always brought a fair and righteous punishment with which nobody could quarrel. They were naughty, and that was the consequence.
So the author is reminding us, that IF those people got a fair punishment for disobedience how much more will come to those who are negligent and have no care for the true message of salvation through Jesus?
Today sit on what was done in order to give you this gift of salvation; remember the cross and what a body had to endure in order for you to be free.
